To use UNIX and LINUX on the computers in the IT&E Instructional classrooms
(ST-124, ST-127, ST-128) and Computing Laboratories (ST2-137), you will need a personal IT&E UNIX cluster account. (This account is not your Mason account.)
Having this account is not currently required to use Microsoft Windows on the computers.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Who is eligible?
Any student who is registered for one or more classes in any of the IT&E departments (CS, CEIE, ECE, SEOR, INFS, IT, ...) for the CURRENT semester is
eligible for an IT&E account. IT&E courses may also be cross-listed in other departments.
What will my IT&E username be?
Your username will be the same as your Mason cluster account (see below) and your GMU MEMO mail account.
For how long may I use my IT&E account?
A student's IT&E account is deactivated if he/she does not register for an eligible IT&E course before the last date of enrollment of the current
semester.
How do I get an account on the Mason cluster (OSF1)?
All members of the GMU community (students, faculty, staff) are eligible for an account on the central Mason Unix system (mason.gmu.edu).
To setup your password (or reset a forgotten password), follow the links and instructions on http://mason.gmu.edu
The mason cluster (and the IT&E cluster) are Unix-based systems. If you are unfamiliar with working on a Unix system in a command line environment,
please take advantage of the free online courses available from SmartForce.
After you have obtained your mason acccount password, test it before continuing.
If you do not already have an ssh client installed on your
computer, you may download a free client from the GMU ITU download site. Install the client and
use it to connect to mason.gmu.edu (example). Also take a look at the Student Technology Guide How To's.
After you have set or changed your password by this accounts process, we recommend that you log in (with SSH) and change your password again using the
passwd command.
Note: SSH is a secure protocol for communicating between computer
systems. The older telnet protocol has been disabled on the IT&E cluster
to help ensure data security. (Even if telnet could still be used to
connect to a system, you should always use ssh to prevent someone from
reading your data transmissions.)
How do I get an IT&E account?
Your IT&E account is created for you automatically and should be ready within two buisiness days of registration.
To log into an IT&E system use your GMU email username and password.
(Your username is the first part of your email address. For example, if your email address is astudent@gmu.edu your username
would be
astudent.)
Note: You must have your Mason(OSF1) account working properly before you can access your IT&E account. By
"working
properly" we mean that you need to be able to login to mason.gmu.edu, and get to a command shell prompt. Until you get that part working, the rest of the process will not
work. (Test it by connecting to mason.gmu.edu using SSH and running a command like "pwd", "help", or "more /usr/local/README".)
I forgot my IT&E account password--how do I get a new one?
Your IT&E account is the same as your GMU email account.
If you forgot your email password you can reset it at https://chimera.gmu.edu/e-mail/prod/index.html.
What if my IT&E account is not recognized by this process?
This can happen for a number of reasons. The primary one is that the information from the Registrar's Office has not been updated and thus IT&E department does not have the information of your course registration. If you registered very late, it sometimes takes us a bit longer than normal. Write to system@ite.gmu.edu in case you are not recognized by the process.
If an account is deleted, can the files be retrieved?
Students who are expecting to not register for the forthcoming semester should back-up their important files onto floppies or ftp them to another
account. Deleted accounts are kept on back-up for a limited time.
How do I access my IT&E account from home?
This is how you can access your IT&E account from home or from any computer outside the IT&E physical network. You will have to log on twice:
- start and log on to the IT&E VPN (example)
- use SSH to log on to an IT&E host computer(example)
Windows users can follow this detailed walkthrough to get, install and use the software.
The VPN software and instructions are available for Linux, Mac and Windows in the IT&E Access
Manager pages. You may download SSH for Windows from GMU ITU Support.
(If your VPN doesn't work from home, but SSH does, there is a workaround you can use until you get your VPN software working:
Simply use SSH to connect to mason.gmu.edu first, and from the mason prompt run the command ssh zeus.ite.gmu.edu.
If you need help with setting up the VPN software contact us.)
The server will limit the amount of time for entering the password, so if you see the Disconnected: Server responded with "Connection closed" message, try again.
See the FAQs for more information on how to telecompute and transfer files.
Can I set up a personal web page on my IT&E account?
Setting up web pages would be more suitable in your mason account, where they may be made publicly available, than they would be in your IT&E unix account, where
they can be accessed only by users logged on the IT&E cluster. See "Create your own home page(s) on Mason Cluster", in the Information Technology Guides and Web Design Basics and SmartForce for more about making web pages.
