Carl G. Schaefer, Jr.
o MW,
4:30 to 5:45 pm, S&T II, Room 7
o Syllabus,
1/22/2003
- Land
Sailor Project
- The performance specification
for the semester project contains design constraints, project
administration, funding line, documentation requirements, grading
criteria, and a sheet of reference material.
- Here is a helpful AMYA (American Model Yachting
Association) reference that provides excellent guidance on construction
techniques and radio-control system design: “U.S. One Meter Construction
Guide”, by Bob DeBow and Bob Jansen,
copyright 2000. This is an Adobe
Acrobat file.
- Group assignments:
- Team 1: TBA
- Team 2: TBA
- Team 3: TBA
- Sail and Rig Design and
Manufacturing: Here is a link to a
source for Coverite Micafilm, a
Mylar-type material that some model yacht builders have used for sail
material. This is only one
alternative; obviously, there are other materials that might be just as
effective. Here is a link to Sailcut4, a CAD package for designing
sails.
- Controls Design and
Manufacturing: Here is
a link to information about the Futaba
2-channel radio and sail servo’s supplied to you for this
project. Please note that this web
page includes specifications for servo torque and other pertinent
information required for your design.
Radio systems and servos will be distributed to the three teams in
Week 2.
- A list of URL’s
to land sailing Web sites and resources. Many of
these web sites include design guidelines, construction guides, and
software for assessing land sailor performance.
- Yacht diagram from
CNN Sailing.
- Racing Rules of Sailing in brief
- Introduction to sailing and sailing terminology.
